Self Belief

“Still I Rise” By Maya Angelou

“I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide” An important word in this line is “Ocean” because the ocean is an unstoppable force and she is comparing herself to an ocean showing how powerful and influential she is. In fact the poem “Still I Rise” is about self-belief, hope and over coming oppression.

Maya Angelou uses strong confidence to show her power and tell her story about over coming oppression as a black female. This poem is her way of taking back her power that was taken away by the white washed society.

She possibly wrote this poem to show people that she is strong and to inspire others like her to stand up for what they believe in and take back their power. This poem shows her bragging to the people who put her down in the past showing that she is not afraid to speak up and show off her wealth.

The effect of the repetition in stanza 9 is to conclude the poem and to show determination to empower. This also brings the readers attention in and makes you feel powerful when reading.
